BREAKING NEWS: HAITI EARTHQUAKE STATUS

PLEASE KEEP HAITI IN YOUR THOUGHTS

7.2 magnitude Earthquake in Haiti

We share with you extremely sad news today about Haiti. A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Haiti early this morning and has caused widespread damage in our Caribbean nation.

For comparison purposes, Haiti’s 2010 earthquake measured 7.0, though is a far more densely populated area. Though news continues to come in from the affected areas, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reports that “high casualties are probable and the disaster is widespread.”Aftershocks are prevalent, which the USGS has classified as “violent” (second-to-highest level on its scale). The USGS also issued a red alert, which outlines the extent of expected economic losses and fatalities.

The epicenter of the quake was about 160km (100 miles) by road from central Port-au-Prince, 12km (7.5 miles) northeast of Saint-Louis-du-Sud and was 10km deep. Strong seismic movement was felt in Port-au-Prince according to our board members there, and also in Mirebalais, where our Choix campus is located.

At this moment, we are deeply concerned for all of our neighbors in the regions of Jérémie and Les Cayes who are suffering from this tragic event. News of a subsequent tsunami also was just received but not yet substantiated. We can report that there are no reported injuries or damage in our area of Mirebalais and our campus remains secure.
