Haiti, Choice & The Power of Perception

Student's running
Haiti has been in the news lately. Yet, unfortunately, based on our on-the-ground experience, we know that the stories that have received the most attention are not wholly accurate or are incomplete.

Eight years after a catastrophic earthquake devastated parts of the country, certainly Haiti continues to face some challenges on its road to long-term recovery. But, if we define Haiti only by what it is lacking, we do not appreciate all of the country’s vibrant assets: a natural beauty, rich resources, its profound and distinct role in the history of liberty, and a vibrant and passionate people committed to a dynamic future.

Those who know Haiti and its people know that the country is so much more than its GDP. Haiti is home to young girls like our 4th grader Marllychelle, who dreams of becoming a “professor that teaches nurses.” Even at 9 years old, she recently wrote to her sponsor that “I would like for Haiti to change, to become a more powerful country, where everyone can have good health.”

Choix’s focus on leadership development empowers students like Marllychelle to begin to shape their own future and those of their communities, to develop their own choices and, ultimately, to change the world.

CHOIX IMPACT, HAITI PROGRESS

With the partnership of Choix student sponsors and other contributors, Choix provides Marllychelle and her classmates a high quality leadership development-based education that will offer them choices for their future.

Yet the Choix education environment also is changing the economic and social conditions of these students’ communities today. Choix students use what they have learned to help local businesses, inspire their families, and to care for their natural environment. As Choix students learn to develop their own voices and identities, they are empowered to make educated and informed decisions about their lives and encouraged to use their skills and talents to have a positive impact on their country’s future.

2. The Choix Sponsorship Program links a Choix student with a sponsor. Sponsorships have profound significance to our students and are one of the most worthwhile investments someone can make in our program.

Sponsorships let students know that someone, somewhere is rooting for them and following their progress, inspiring them to be the best they can be. When our students know that someone outside of their small community is thinking of them, it can offer a meaningful boost to their morale. To sponsor a student, or to find more information, please click here.

HAITI SUPPORTS CHOIX

Choix is honored to be the recipient of a grant from the Haitian organization, Fondation Sogebank, to support its programs and operations. Established in 1993, Fondation Sogebank provides support to the private sector in Haiti to improve the Haitian social environment by “strengthening the communication, interaction and collaboration between social entities.”

“The Sogebank Group commits itself and uses its financial, material and human resources for the realization of projects and activities that are of collective interest.” Choix is deeply grateful to Fondation Sogebank for its partnership in our students’ and our community’s future!
