Lifesaving Learning without Borders in Haiti

For young adults living in Haiti’s most challenging circumstances, Choix delivers a fully online graduate academic program through robust scholarships, paired with virtual, high-touch faculty support that keeps learning alive even when roads, schools, or entire regions are cut off.

Our academic excellence model integrates tutoring, mentoring, leadership development, and athletic and health education, while scholarships cover tuition, uniforms, supplies, and essential needs so finances never block a student’s progress.

After operating on-campus since 2011, Choix transitioned fully online in Spring 2025, reflecting our commitment to serve students wherever and however learning remains possible.

Choix Today: The Graduate Academic Excellence Program

We are dedicated to remaining in solidarity with our graduates, some of whom have been with Choix since our inception and practically all of whom started in Choix’s 1st grade.

As long as resources allow, Choix will protect and strengthen its legacy through a program that has demonstrated exceptional results throughout our history: the Choix Graduate Academic Program and scholarship support for graduates.

To ensure that our graduates’ learning continues under any circumstances, Choix now operates a fully online Graduate Academic Program. This program serves all qualifying Choix graduates in grades 8 through 13 (philo). By using low bandwidth platforms, flexible scheduling and one-on-one support structures, our faculty and nurse maintain a deep network of connections so that every student can continue to participate, wherever they are currently residing in Haiti.

Our faculty members use their creativity and resolve, together with digital tools, to replicate the energy and focus of in-person learning. The program offers tutoring and academic enrichment, mentoring, social and emotional education, personal development and health education. Students have one on one direct access to our nurse for consultation, offering trusted guidance at a time when most families have little or no access to health care.

Alongside this online program, Choix continues its scholarship initiative for all qualifying graduates. Scholarships cover not only tuition at local academic programs, but also uniforms, books and supplies, transportation, and other essential resources on an as needed basis. This combined academic and scholarship program has led to measurable success year after year. For example, Choix graduates who participate in our academic excellence program have maintained a 100% success rate on national exams, compared to an average passing rate of 54 percent for students in our region.

Choix’s Necessary Pivot: Our Legacy

For well over a decade, Choix operated both an elementary program as well as an additional academic program for its graduates, both taking place on its physical campus. Throughout that time, Choix’s academic program provided more than just classes. It offered an exceptional education, daily nutrition and a stable environment where children could learn and grow. Parents trusted that their children would be safe, fed and challenged academically each day.

Our objective was to give students the skills to support themselves and their families, educate their own children, and help to break the cycle of poverty.

However, by 2024 the contributor environment for Haiti collapsed due to circumstances in the country: violent gangs frequently blocked roads and ports and public institutions struggled to function. While we could have sustained both programs from an operations perspective, even in the face of these challenges, we unfortunately were unable to sustain this elementary component of our program from a financial perspective.

Sunsetting the Elementary Program

As a result, we graduated our final class of 6th graders in Summer 2024. Yet, Choix itself did not close. Instead, we persisted to operate our Graduate Academic Enrichment Program in person on our campus for as long as conditions allowed, with our graduates gathering safely at Choix after school for tutoring, mentoring and leadership development.

When Haiti’s security situation made physical attendance impossible, we shifted our entire program online so that learning could continue without interruption. Today, Choix provides a fully digital Graduate Academic Program that reaches our students wherever they now reside, supported by our faculty’s creativity, resolve and commitment to every learner.

This pivot ensures that students can continue learning even when roads are impassable or campuses are unsafe. Our faculty provide virtual, high touch educational support to students wherever they now live in Haiti, keeping learning alive even when roads, schools, or entire neighborhoods are cut off.

Although financial pressures forced us to sunset our elementary school in 2024, the values and knowledge fostered there remain the foundation of Choix’s work. Many of our graduates and staff have been with Choix since its inception and the lessons learned on campus continue to guide our online and scholarship programs.

“Even one day or one year at Choix is a foundation for their knowledge. We must value every day of every school year.” - Choix faculty member
